On Friday, I ran the first Norwescon steampunk fashion show :
"While journeying to the center of the Earth or taking a flight to the moon, what does the well dressed steampunk wear? Join us and see the fashions of the future past. Sky pirates, Chrononaughts and more will strut their stuff and show off the latest technology. Feel free to bring your own steamy styles as well!
We had a huge turnout of steamily attired folks , and then we had a Q&A complete with show and tell. We had a capacity crowd and everyone seemed to enjoy it.
On Saturday, I attended "[link]" Steampunk 101 - Where do I start?". The room was overflowing with folk wanting to see this panel.
The next panel "Steampunk 102 - Building Your Costume" I was asked to sit in on. It was again quite well attended. We covered a lot of the basics and helped with questions concerning working up your steampunk look.
Lastly, we had "Steampunk 103 - Propmaking" I had finished a [link]" new gun with some light effects. I also brought several of my other steampunk [link]" arsenal to show off.
Afterward, we gathered all the well dressed steamfolk and did a [link]" photo shoot in the lobby. I am pleased to say it was a wonderful turnout!
The rest of the weekend we fielded questions at the Steamcon table and sold memberships. I was told by several people that they didn't know about steampunk before but are now converts!
In discussing Steamcon with people, I realized that everyone feels an urgent need to dress up for the con. I assure them it isn't a requirement, but they seem to feel it is an imperative anyway! Since inspiring people to dress up is one of my favorite crusades, I am quite pleased.
So, steampunk was quite successful at Norwescon! I have even discussed doing more panels at several upcoming local conventions and it looks like I may be participating at Dragoncon as well. Viva la steampunk!
